It is for those who don't mind using a large device if they're getting a tall and immersive display to make up for it. After using the Galaxy A80 for around two weeks, I have very mixed feelings about the glass back panel.
On the one hand, almost 90 per cent of the rear panel looks clean with just the Samsung branding, which makes it look quite minimalistic and premium. But then you see top two centimeters that is divided from the rest of the panel. That's the part that holds the triple camera setup in a wide, band-aid-shaped module.
It doesn't look quite as attractive as the rest of the back. Notably, Samsung has used a tougher Gorilla Glass 6 on the back while the display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. This theoretically means that a drop would damage the display but would leave the rear panel and possibly the camera mechanism unharmed.
While the Galaxy A80 offers a unique look, it also misses out on some key features. First, there is no 3. Next up is the earpiece. There is none. Samsung is using an acoustic sound system that will emit sound through the display.
Practically, this doesn't sound much different than speaking through the earpiece. Voice clarity is decent and loud enough to understand. Lastly, the A80 lacks storage expansion, so you only get support for two nano SIM cards. In order to offer this full-screen display, Samsung has employed a very unique technology to offer front cameras. The triple camera system on the back rises up via a motorised system and flips to the front so that you can use the same camera setup for selfies.
If you think about it, this is a pretty great solution because you get to use the same high-quality image sensor for the back and for selfies. As unique and awe-inspiring as it looks, the rotating camera system is perhaps the most impractical solution yet.
The whole mechanism raises a lot of concerns like durability and speed. The mechanism rises and the cameras rotate to the front in a simultaneous manner when you enable the selfie mode in the camera app. It takes over 1 second for the rising and rotating to complete, which is slower than your typical pop-up cameras today.
The sluggish rotating camera system is also perhaps why Samsung decided against providing face unlock. What also concerns me is that there are too many moving parts involved here. The rising panel and the rotating camera module make the entire system twice as more susceptible to damage, dust and particles getting in. With so many moving pieces, this also means the Galaxy A80 is not water resistant. This is Samsung's proprietary display that offers a complete full-screen, immersive experience by removing the notch or hole punch cutout.
The 6. A pure, edge-to-edge Samsung display is a dream come true, and the Galaxy A80 does not disappoint here. The display looks great with vibrant and punchy colours, deep blacks and a large, distraction-free screen that makes watching videos and playing games a true delight.
It also comes with Widevine L1 support, which means you will be able to stream content on platforms like Netflix and Prime Video in true HD resolution. The display offers good brightness levels and excellent viewing angles as one expects from a Samsung AMOLED display, so you won't have any trouble reading the screen under peak sunlight.
The Galaxy A80 display is set to Vivid mode by default so colours look saturated and deep, but you can always switch it to Neutral mode for more natural and balanced colour reproduction. The Galaxy A80 was launched globally a few months ago as the first phone to come with Qualcomm's newest mid-range processor, the Snapdragon G.
By the time the A80 came to India, we already got the Redmi K20, which offers a Snapdragon chipset at a comparatively more affordable price of Rs 21, The SDG is identical to the SD except the former gets a slight bump in GPU performance, which means it should offer a better gaming experience on paper.
The Galaxy A80 is a fast and smooth performer, but a Snapdragon G chipset inside a phone that costs close to Rs 50, makes little sense no matter how you put it. As a standalone device, the Galaxy A80 is snappy as apps open and load quickly and multitasking is a breeze with 8GB of RAM which is ample. During my time with the device, I found little to no lag or stuttering while going about my day messaging on WhatsApp, browsing through social media apps and playing games.
Combined with a large, bezel-less display, the Galaxy A80 makes for a great gaming smartphone.
That being said, the phone does get slightly warm during a minute session of PUBG, which is something we did not face on the Redmi K20 or the Realme X for that matter. While the Galaxy A80 delivers good mid-range performance, it is not the phone we would recommend at this price point as you will find phones like the OnePlus 7, Honor 20 and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom offer significantly better performance with flagship processors at more affordable prices. And if you spend just Rs 3, more, you can buy the Galaxy S10e, which offers a flagship Exynos chipset, although it gets a much smaller Infinity-O display.
One UI also offers a redesign UI that brings the interactive elements to the bottom half of the display for easier accessibility, which makes it easier to use a device as big as the Galaxy A OneUI also brings features like Digital Wellbeing that gives you an overview of how much time you have spent on the A80 and setting app timers to control your usage. It also includes WInd Down that will turn the display to grayscale before bedtime. Additionally, you get new gesture navigation and Always On display. There is also Bixby Home that can be found by swiping right on the home screen.
App icons look big by default to make it easier to read and fill up the large screen, but you can reduce the size in Settings. One UI looks clean with very few preloaded apps. Netflix and Facebook also come preinstalled, which are always useful. The Galaxy A80 doesn't dish out ads, but I occasionally noticed banners promoting the A80 and the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 in the drop-down notification menu. The Galaxy A80 does not offer face unlock, which is disappointing for a phone priced at Rs 48, What's more disappointing, however, is optical fingerprint sensor which is laughably slow and inaccurate.
Companies like Oppo and OnePlus offer faster in-display sensors, compared to which the A80's sensor feels frustratingly sluggish. There is a single speaker grille on the bottom that delivers decent loudness and clarity. The Galaxy A80 also features Dolby Atmos, which offers a sweet surround sound experience when listening via headphones. The truly unique aspect about the Galaxy A80 is its rotating camera, allowing you to use the same triple rear camera system for selfies. When switching to the selfie mode, the top rear panel rises up and the camera system flips to the front.
The main camera shoots in 12MP resolution by default, but you can switch to raw 48MP mode by changing the aspect ratio to H. Using the default mode, the sensor uses pixel binning to stitch together four shots to create one bright and attractive photo. This works well in daylight and is recommended for low-light as well. Whether at home or on the go, enjoy impressive entertainment at your fingertips. The Galaxy Tab A features Dolby Atmos sound, plus large screen sizes with minimal bezels for optimal viewing.
