It has hardware, specs and nice-to-have features that are all well-executed and enjoyable to use, plus a few neat additions like the speaker system and 3D-based face unlock. But LG's consistent missteps in software design, camera quality that doesn't stand up to the competition, and focus on new features like Air Motion that are purely distractions all get in the way of a core phone experience that is otherwise solid and worth considering.
The 3D ToF-enabled features, except for the excellent portrait selfies and the Face Unlock, feels downright gimmicky. And it's really hard to see any proper use case for those at all. It will be cool to show off to some friends but you will end up using the fingerprint reader, the Face Unlock and resort to tapping instead of waving with your hands when it comes to simple tasks like changing a track, capturing a screenshot and turning up the volume.
Some kind of competitive fast charging tech would have been much more appreciated.
We're also glad to see that LG stuck with a classic fingerprint reader and paired it with reliable facial recognition. In-screen fingerprint readers may look cool and futuristic, but they're simply not good enough yet to prefer over a classic solution.
