Even just at the peak of the optical zoom, things are impressive. Hybrid zoom gets you a bit closer to your subject and still produces amazing images. Going beyond that, it starts to get a little creepy. But the image quality is still good enough that you could use the P30 Pro to keep an eye on someone from a comfortable distance — comfortable for you, uncomfortable for everyone else, that is.
There is AI built in that will help identify the different photo scenarios and adjust the settings accordingly. That AI is carried through to the megapixel front-facing camera, where your selfies have never looked so good. Stick to the more natural effects, for your own sake. Although the camera is impressive and certainly the star of the show, the phone has other high points. That puts it on a par with the Mate 20 Pro when it comes to performance, and there is little you can throw at this phone to slow it significantly.
It sticks to the by-now familiar smartphone design: big screen, curved edges, as little bezel as possible. The controversial camera notch has been cut down to a small dimple, but the biggest change is the elimination of the phone earpiece. Acoustic sound uses the entire display to generate sound.
The display itself is an OLED 6. The latter is not quite as advanced as the one on the Samsung S10, but it works well enough. Huawei has taken a great product and managed to work in some significant improvements. You also get the reverse wireless charging option, so your phone doubles as a battery pack for other devices. Sharing is caring, and all that. There is a dual SIM version of the phone available, but you can get one that supports external memory cards.
The memory card format may cause an issue, though: the nano memory card introduced with the Mate 20 rated, so dust and water resistant. The days of losing phones to a sudden dunk or two are gone — thankfully. Review: They may be a little bulkier but a reasonable price and Alexa integration makes them worthwhile. Huawei P30 Pro review: Impressive phone makes great snap judgments With its stunning quad camera, the P30 will be up to your eye more often than your ear Ciara O'Brien.

There's noticeable jagged edges with the 5x zoom but the color palette is fresher than we expected when using the digital zoom. Zooming is a big feature with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and, for the most part, the quality on show is impressive.
When shooting at 10MP, 3x zoom makes use of the optics. Push this to 5x and there's some digital manipulation with the zooming. While this should mean that picture does become a lot more pixelated there really wasn't the jagginess that we would have expected from this zoom. Having OIS built into the lens definitely helps with making sure the image is steady enough to digitize in the first place. Interestingly, when it comes to the choice of lenses, you can go between a 16mm, 27mm and 80mm-equivalent focal lengths. While the option to shoot in 40MP is on board, we actually preferred shooting in 10MP.
It's here that you can use the camera's AU functionality and where you can actually zoom. In fact we were continually impressed with the images we managed to take on the Mate 20 Pro. Taking macro shots with the camera was an absolute joy. Although it took a couple of attempts for the camera to lock focus when in this more, the shots you can take are filled with close-up detail that you can only get when you are 2.
There's still some work needed to make sure that the macro effect is seamless but it makes great use of the ultra-wide lens and makes you almost forget about the missing monochrome lens. The monochrome lens has been lost and it's a shame - we just don't think the software-based option has as much impact. Without any tweaking the color of the grass is rich but add HDR to it and things really start to pop The HDR functionality on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is hidden in its menus but turn it on and it really does enhance an image.
Although we have seen better on a smartphone. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a brilliant phone and an even better camera. It takes the sort of images you wouldn't have dreamed to have been able to take just a year or so ago on a phone and has a lovely balance between actual optics and processing power. While Huawei is pushing AI as much as possible when it comes to its camera technology, it really should be the lenses it is shouting about here as they really do deserve recognition for how good they are. Let's hope that Huawei's partnership with Leica continues as while this may not be a phone to ditch your DSLR for, the camera tech on show here is compelling enough to maybe leave the big camera at home once in a while.

Our Verdict Huawei has done it again with the Mate 20 Pro - this is one of the best camera phones on the market, easily matching the Huawei P20 Pro for lenses and quality. For Superb lens setup Fantastic portrait mode Ultra-wide lens really works.
Zooming into the people in the first image reveals an amount of over-softening that makes them look like a product of Monet. Despite the altered semantics, the P20 Pro doesn't win on any count here, and the result so close to the iPhone X's screen that you probably won't be able to see any difference. It deserves a good grade for that alone. It has better optical zoom than the iPhone X 3x vs. When taking selfies, software will clean up the image to help faces stand out from their background. To sum things up: the Mate 20 Pro really is far and away the best smartphone Huawei have produced to date.
Against HDR is vibrant but we wanted more No monochrome lens. Huawei has been working hard with Leica to make sure what it offers is as good as can be on a phone and the monochrome lens has been replaced with an ultra wide-angle lens, The new lenses are situated near the top of the back of the device and are presented in a square array.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro camera: performance To say we were impressed with the Mate 20 Pro's camera capabilities is an understatement. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro Portrait mode really impressed us. This shot has very little blurring of the subject, even though the background has a nice blur to it. The leaves falling in the top left were captured perfectly too. Image 2 of 4 Huawei Mate Pro: no zoom Without the ultra-wide lens the image does lose some of its impact. Image 3 of 4 Huawei Mate 20 Pro: 3x zoom Although some detail is lost, we were impressed by both the 3x zoom functionality. Image 4 of 4 Huawei Mate 20 Pro: 5x zoom There's noticeable jagged edges with the 5x zoom but the color palette is fresher than we expected when using the digital zoom.
